What is Airflow dental cleaning?
Airflow is a revolutionary hygiene treatment that uses a controlled stream of warmed water, air, and fine powder. It is far more comfortable than traditional scaling, as it cleans without the "scraping" sensation, making it ideal for patients with sensitive teeth.
How often should I see a dental hygienist in Cambridge?
For most patients, we recommend a hygiene visit every 6 months. However, if you are prone to gum disease or are undergoing orthodontic treatment like Invisalign, we may suggest a visit every 3–4 months to ensure your oral health stays on track.
Does dental hygiene treatment hurt?
Not at Darwin Dental. By utilizing modern ultrasonic instruments and Airflow® technology, we minimize discomfort. If you have particularly sensitive teeth, we can use specialized numbing gels or warmed water to make the experience completely stress-free.
Can a hygiene appointment whiten my teeth?
While hygiene isn't a chemical "whitening" treatment, the Airflow® system is incredibly effective at removing external stains from coffee, tea, and red wine. Most patients find their teeth look significantly brighter and cleaner immediately after the session.
Why do I need to see a hygienist if I brush twice a day?
Even with perfect brushing, plaque can harden into "calculus" (tartar) in hard-to-reach areas. This can only be removed by a professional. Regular hygiene prevents this buildup from causing gum recession and tooth loss.
Is hygiene treatment safe for dental implants and braces?
Yes. In fact, it is essential. Airflow® is the gold standard for cleaning around dental implants and orthodontic brackets, as it is non-abrasive and can reach spaces that traditional tools and toothbrushes simply cannot.
How long does a hygiene appointment take?
A standard hygiene and Airflow® session typically takes between 30 and 45 minutes, depending on your individual needs and the amount of stain removal required.
Will my gums bleed after the cleaning?
If your gums are slightly inflamed (gingivitis), you may experience minor bleeding during the clean. This is a sign that the treatment is working to remove the bacteria causing the inflammation. This usually subsides within 24 hours.
Can I eat and drink straight after my hygiene appointment?
We recommend waiting about 30 to 60 minutes before eating or drinking anything that could stain (like coffee or berries), especially if we have applied a fluoride treatment to protect your enamel.
1What is the difference between a check-up and a hygiene visit?
A check-up (performed by Dr Max Leslie) is a diagnostic exam to look for decay and structural issues. A hygiene visit (performed by our hygienist) is a preventative therapy focused specifically on cleaning the teeth and maintaining gum health.
